The 75th Republic Day
The Indian nation is all set to celebrate 75th Republic day on 26th January 24, to honor the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect and the country became a republic. Every year, India’s Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 with great grandeur. It marks the day when the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, became effective on 26 January 1950. It is a day dedicated to paying tribute to the Constitution of Independent India, which was formulated by the drafting committee supervised by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
The constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic, assures its citizens justice, equality, and liberty, and endeavors to promote fraternity. Republic Day holds immense significance throughout India and is celebrated by all Indians with great enthusiasm.
Celebration of Republic Day
On every January 26, the proud people of India celebrate Republic Day with grandeur and passion. As January 26th is marked by celebrations and patriotic fervor across the country. The nation observes Republic Day as a national holiday to honor the establishment and implementation of the Indian Constitution. Evey school and all the Govt offices celebrate the Republic Day. Various activities, contests, and competitions are scheduled for students with patriotic music. Memories of struggles for independence resurfaced through various means such as music, TV, podcasts to show/give tribute to the freedom fighters. Patriotic movies are aired on almost every TV channel.
In the National Capital, Delhi, a grand celebration of the Republic Day features enormous military and cultural heritage spectacle. The celebration is attended by honorable dignitaries from other countries, Indian politicians, as well as the general public.
On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Kartavya Path, which is performed as a tribute to India, its unity in diversity, and its rich cultural heritage by the states of India by building beautiful tableaus. Various states and Union Territories display culture and heritage, among other themes, through colorful tableaux. The theme for the tableaux at the 2024 75th Republic Day Parade is ‘भारत – लोकतंत्र की मातृका (जननी) / Bharat – The Mother of Democracy. The annual Republic Day celebrations involve the unfurling of the national flag by the President of India, who leads over the Republic Day parade. The celebrations, inaugurated with a grand parade, are held in the capital, New Delhi, from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s House), along the Kartavya Path, and follows Rajpath past India Gate, and onto the historic Red Fort. Its route is more than five kilometers long. And on the eve of Republic Day, the President of India addresses the nation. The Republic Day celebrations last for three days, and they end with the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29.
Significance of the Republic Day
India gained independence in 1947 from colonial rule. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950. The first President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad unfurled the national flag on this day, marking the birth of the Indian Republic. The day was declared a national holiday after being recognized as the Republic Day of India.
On 26th January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. And the dominion of India became the republic of India. The day also marks the celebration of the Indian Constitution, a foundational document central to India’s greatness today. This day signifies the nation’s voyage towards unity, democracy, and progress, capturing the core of its historic accomplishments.
Republic Day signifies the essence of independent India. On this day in 1950, the Indian National Congress declared Poorna Swaraj (complete self-governance), marking India’s independence from British colonial rule. The day also serves as a reminder to Indian citizens of their power to choose their government democratically.
